The Purpose of This Site

For the most part, this site is simply an adoptables site that allows you to "adopt" your own owl. You can roleplay them, breed them, and buy items or more owls with the Seht you earn. The main idea, basically, is to have fun.

But this site is also here to help educate the general public about owls. Most species of owls are rare, if not on the verge of extinction, because of their habitats being destroyed. A lot of countries have laws prohibiting the hunting and/or domestication of owls to try and save them. But hopefully if more people are aware that these magnificent creatures are being destroyed, they will promote the saving and rehabilitation of them.

_Creating Your Nest_

Ash Tree Island > Nests > New Thread

To create a nest, simply create a thread in the "Nest" board in the Ash Trees Island category. You can give it whatever name you like, and categorize the owls you adopt in any way you like. If you want some tips on creating a nest, see Flyte's tutorial Creating Your Nest. Once you have created a nest, before posting anything else, please PM the admin so they can put an inventory in it. If you post before the admin can put in your inventory, the post(s) will be deleted regardless of what was in them.

_Adopting Your Owl_

Ash Tree Island > Preserve > Owl Preserve

To adopt an owl, simply click the "Ash Tree Island" tab and go to the "Preserve" board. Every two or so weeks new owl adoptables are put up in the "Owl Preserve" thread for free. Copy the code given below the owl images, and paste it in your nest. You are not obligated to pick up any owls you do not want.

The owls in the Owl Preserve are free- however, there are other ways to obtain owls. Sometimes raffles, auctions, or contests will be held where you can win an owl. You can also sometimes buy extremely rare owls in the Secret Market.

_Raffles, Auctions, Contests, Oh my!_

As mentioned above, there will sometimes be special events held where you can win owls. Most of these owls will be uncommon or rare, and every once in a blue moon you might even be lucky enough to win a customized owl. Below are quick descriptions of these events.

Raffles. You buy tickets using your seht, and your name will then be placed on the list for how many tickets you bought. i.e. say you buy five tickets, after George and Helen have already bought some. This is what the list will look like.

1-8 George
9-12 Helen
13-17 [your username]

The ticket limit and price will vary depending on the raffle. At the end of the raffle (a set date will be given), the admin will use a random number generator to pick a number. For this example raffle, if the number was 13, 14, 15, 16, or 17, you will have won the raffle.

Auctions. Basically like any other auction. The prize will be shown, and the starting bid and minimum bid increment will be given. These will vary depending on the auction. You can bid Seht and try to outbid all the other players. The auction will end on a given date, and the last player who bid the highest wins the prize.

Contests. There are many, many of these. Design-your-own-owl contest, create-the-best-story contest, etc, etc. Because of the variety, not much information can be given here. But don't worry, all the information you need will be in the contest thread.

_Taking Care of Your Owl_

Your owl doesn't technically need any attention. They live forever whether or not you do anything with them. However, if you wish to level up your owl, you must roleplay. For every certain amount of roleplaying posts you have with your owl, it will gain a level. The higher level your owl is, the more chance it has of finding items and other owls in the wild. Higher levels also increase the level and skills of any eggs your owl produces.

You can also buy items in the Owl's Market for your owls' nest. Some of it is decorative, some of it is for breeding purposes, and some of it is probably just completely random.

_What to do With Your Owl_

Well, as mentioned before, you really don't have to do anything with your owl(s). But, preferably, you roleplay with them to level them up and interact with other users, breed them to create better leveled owlets (baby owls), and put them in your signatures on other sites so I can get free advertising !

_Owl's Market_

The Owl's Market is basically where you'll find everything you need for your owl. Breeding items, nest items, pets, etc. This is also where you can sell unwanted items that you obtain during your roleplays.

_Member's Market_

This is where you can buy... member-y type things. Customized signatures, avatars, roleplaying rights, etc. Customized owls will also be here at some point, hopefully.

_Member's Features_

This is where normal members can sell things, or show off their own creations. You can create a shop and sell whatever you like-- items you found, baby owls, your own personal graphics, etc, etc. Feel free to be creative! You can also advertise or show off your own adoptables in a special sub-board specifically for that purpose. However, if you have your own site you'd like to affiliate with Owls of Ash Trees, please post in the 'Advertising and Affiliates' board.

__Members' Shops

To create a shop, simply make a thread in the sub-board, under Member's Features. It's completely free! Sell whatever you would like, and charge whatever you want to. The admin keeps a close eye on these shops, and when someone purchases something from you, they will take the Seht out of that person's reserve and add it onto yours. If you're selling art or your own adoptables, it is your responsibility to give it to the customer. Too many complaints that you aren't giving what you promised, and your shop will be deleted.

_Secret Market_

Perhaps not entirely "secret", this market is very special. It only comes out on the day of a new moon, and sometimes not even then. Here you can buy very rare owls and items. But be warned- they aren't cheap.

Roleplaying Guide

_Where Can I Roleplay?_

All roleplaying takes place in "The World". There are multiple places you can roleplay, all with their own unique settings and items. However, to avoid confusion, your owl will not find items or wild owls unless you are roleplaying alone.

_General Roleplaying Guidelines_

When you first post with your owl, either starting or joining a roleplay, please post the stats and any items equipped to that owl. You can simply copy and paste everything from your nest page. i.e.

You can also add breed and gender, but it isn't necessary. You only have to do this for your first post with that owl. Afterward you can leave it out and simply roleplay.

Multi-Group RP- What is it? Multi-group RP means that you and another player roleplay together. You can roleplay with only one other player if you want, or five! Or ten! It's up to you.

Individual RP- This means that you are roleplay with yourself. No other player is responding to your posts. Only you are posting continuously in a thread, responding to yourself.

Now, this part is kind of confusing, so pay attention...

You are allowed to roleplay more than one adoptable at once. That means, you can have three of your owl adoptables all interacting and being together in the same post/thread. However, when leveling up an individual adoptable, you must roleplay with only that adoptable, and your persona if you have one. I cannot stress this enough. If you are roleplaying with two or more adoptables, and then you want to count those posts for the level requirements, you will be denied.

Your Persona- As mentioned in the rules, you are encouraged to create your own owl character. Why can't it be a human? Because a) how would humans be roleplayed on Ash Tree Island, or in The Oak? Did they swim across the lake? Did they climb up the giant oak tree? I don't think so. b) what would a human be doing out in the middle of no where, in a forest and mountains?

So, no- no humans. But now you may be asking, what is the point of having an owl character, if they can't level up or do anything to help your adoptable level up? Actually, they do help level up- but not entirely in the way you think. Leveling Up Requirements (click that link if you have not read the thread before) state that you need to have a certain number of posts of Individual RP. That means, you must roleplay with yourself. Now, instead of having your owl adoptable wandering around the woods all by his lonesome, and having absolutely nothing to do-- having a second character who they can react to and talk together makes things much easier, doesn't it?

_Why You Should Roleplay_

Well, for one, roleplaying helps you level up your owls! It also lets you find items to sell to the Owl's Market. And every once in a blue moon you can find a wild owl! If your owl adoptable is the same/a higher level than the wild owl, and you respond with the right things... then you might be able to keep it!

On top of all this, roleplaying gets you Seht. You receive 2 Seht per roleplaying post. The World category is the only category you will receive money for posting in.

_The Willow_

All breeding will be done in The Willow board. This is a willow tree in the Dark Fire Forest that was picked as the breeding spot because of its beauty and strength. Parents hope that it will bless their eggs with the same qualities.

_How to Breed Your Owls_

First off- Do Not Roleplay Any Explicit Content. You will be banned permanently. To breed your owls, you must first buy a Batch of Forget-Me-Nots for 25§. This item lasts for five breedings.

Next you have to roleplay fifteen posts each for both owls that are breeding. So there should be thirty posts total. These posts will have the owls chatting as they usually would in any roleplay. You may talk about the eggs or owlets you hope to have, or be romantic, but it isn't mandatory.

+ It costs 50§ each to breed. If both owls belong to you, you must then pay 100§. This is in addition to the 25§ you pay for the breeding item. +

In the first post of each owl, you should have the owls stats at the top before you roleplay. i.e.

You only have to do this for the first two posts, after that you can leave the stats out. Remember, each breeding post must be 150 words each.

When you have finished the required post minimum (you may continue posting longer if you so wish), PM the admin or a staff member to review the posts. If everything is alright, they will put an in the title, so the admin may know to take the Seht out of your reserve and start working on those eggs.

YOU MAY BREED TWO OWLS OF A DIFFERENT BREED. However, there is no cross-breed line art. The babies will either have the mother or the father's breed. All the owls in the same batch of eggs will be the same breed.

_Pregnancy and Birth_

Technically, your owl doesn't get pregnant. As soon as you're done breeding, you will find the eggs next to the mother owl in your nest. Whenever Flyte has finished the egg's adult stages, the eggs will turn into owlets; this could take from a couple days to a couple weeks, depending on how busy Flyte is. You can then expect the owlets to become adults in about a week.

Eggs-- Eggs cannot be taken from their mother. You will not know anything about the owls while they are still eggs.

Owlets-- Owlets cannot be taken from their mother. All owlets are grey. You will find out the gender and level of your owl now.

Adults-- You will see what breed the owls are, and what they look like now, and you may move them from their mother's side. If you bred with another player's owl, this is when you must decide how you are going to distribute them. One owl can only be owned by one player. Thus, you must decide whether the mother will keep both, or each will get one, or the father will get both, etc, etc.

Once you have decided, you must both PM the admin separately stating what player you bred with, the names of the two owls that bred, and how you will distribute the hatchlings. If it is the same thing, the admin will move whichever hatchlings need to be moved, over to the other nest. If it does not say the same thing, she will PM you both back telling you to please discuss things further.

If the owls have been in the adult stage for two weeks without the admin being contacted, she will send both parents a PM asking whether or not they plan on sharing the owls. After a month of no response, the baby owls will be put up for adoption.

Real Life Owls

A notice to the general public... please be aware that taking a real owl in as a pet is not only dangerous to both you and the owl, it is also very cruel. They are not like cats and dogs and horses, who have thousands of years of domestication behind them. Owls are wild creatures, and deserve to be in the wild. It is where they belong, and where they will always belong.

To be able to take care of an owl, you will need a license in a lot of places. Even if you don't need one, it is a good idea to at least look up basic owl care. Owls can live years- even decades. Large owls can live into their sixties. Having an owl as a pet is a long term commitment. Owls are also dangerous- they have sharp beaks and very sturdy, sharp talons that can easily dig into flesh. Even owls that have been around humans their entire life can harm their owners, by accident or with intent.

Owls of Ash Trees does not promote or encourage the use of owls as house pets. "Adopting" pixels is one thing- taking in the responsibility, commitment, and potential danger of a pet owl is another. Please, think twice before adopting an owl.
